Brought to you by Property Vision
Moving house can feel overwhelming, but a bit of forward planning goes a long way. At Property Vision, we’ve helped many people make a smooth move — and we’ve picked up a few solid tips along the way.
Whether you’re heading across town or to a whole new part of Dublin, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you stay organised and ease the stress.
Book your removals company
Good movers can get booked up fast — especially on Fridays and weekends. Get this sorted early so you can lock in your date and avoid last-minute stress.
Check your insurance
See if your contents insurance covers you during the move. If not, your moving company may offer temporary cover.
Organise parking
If you need a permit or space outside your current or new place, arrange it now. Some removal companies will do this for you (for a fee).
Get to know the new area
Pop by your new neighbourhood. Try a local café, check out nearby shops, or just go for a stroll. It’ll help it feel like home before you even unpack.
Leave behind some helpful info
If you’re selling, gather manuals for appliances you’re leaving — boiler instructions, stopcock locations, meter readings, etc. Buyers will appreciate it, and you’d want the same in return.
Stock up on packing supplies
Boxes, bubble wrap, tape — get what you need so you can pack gradually instead of rushing the night before.
Sort your internet
Contact your broadband provider to arrange the move. Leaving it late could mean delays or penalties.
Tell people you’re moving
Start updating your address with friends, family, and any services or subscriptions you use regularly.
Sort health stuff
If you’re moving out of your current GP’s catchment area, look for a new doctor, dentist, or optician nearby.
Book accommodation (if needed)
Need somewhere to stay between moves? Book early, especially in summer or busy travel periods.
Review your utility bills
Compare energy suppliers based on your new postcode — a good time to find a better deal.
Update your details with credit cards, insurance providers, and your TV/internet provider.
Pet care
Make a plan for pets on moving day — a friend, family member, or a pet sitter can make things easier for everyone.
Get the kids involved (or distracted)
If possible, organise childcare or set aside a safe space with some toys. If they’re old enough, give them a small task so they feel part of the process.
Clear out your kitchen
Start emptying the freezer and check expiry dates on anything that’s been sitting in the back of the cupboard too long.
Notify both councils
Let your local council know you’re moving so you don’t get charged extra for Council Tax (or miss a refund).
Change the locks
It’s a smart idea to change all outside locks once you move in. You never know how many spare keys might be out there.
Update your licences
Let TV Licensing know you’re moving and update your mobile and landline providers.
Also notify the NDLS (National Driver Licence Service) and your bank.
Redirect your post
Use An Post’s redirection service to make sure nothing gets lost during the changeover.
Final bills
Close your water and utility accounts and settle any small bills (milk delivery, bins, local services, etc.).
Sort the keys
Check with your estate agent when you’ll get the keys to your new place, and decide where to leave your old ones. Label any spares and leave them somewhere safe for the buyers.
Smart packing
Put together a ‘first night box’ with essentials: toilet paper, bulbs, basic tools, charger, cash, and some snacks. Keep it in your car, not the van.
Prepare appliances
Disconnect and drain washing machines and dishwashers. Empty and clean the fridge and freezer.
Leave the place clean
A proper clean makes a big difference to the new owners. If time’s tight, consider booking a professional cleaning service — it’s one less thing to worry about.
Take final meter readings
Note your gas, electricity, and water readings before you go.
Stay hydrated
Moving is hard work. Keep water (and snacks!) handy.
Unpack your bedding first
After a long day, being able to fall into a made bed is a small luxury. Clearly label this box and keep it accessible.
Do a final sweep
Before locking up, double-check all rooms, windows, and doors. Leave any non-front-door keys in a labelled envelope for the new owners.
Send meter readings
Contact your old utility providers with your final readings.
Sort new parking permits
Apply for one at your new address if needed — some areas have waiting lists.
Take a breather
You’ve done it! Order your first takeaway, pop open something cold, and take a moment to enjoy your new place.
